These days, the police use radar or laser signals to clock your speed in a speed trap.
The cameras are also used in fixed positions, usually danger spots,
so that they can detect people speeding without the police being iinvolved.
There are some things you need to know about these radar or laser guns should you
get caught by one. The first thing is that they are NOT very accurate,
especially if not aligned and used very carefully.
Therefore, if you are stopped by a policeman or woman using a radar gun to record
your speed, you will not necessarily be in trouble. There are steps
that you can take once the ticket has been issued to help you beat
the speeding ticket.
Radar or laser guns are machines. Machines malfunction. This is the key point when
you decide to plead not guilty and appear in court. Depending on the
size of your fine and the effect it has on your driving recordand
insurance premium, this is a good approach.
As with any defense in court, you need to be prepared for everything and need to be able
to substantiate your claims. Usually, you can get information about
law enforcement, and you may be able to find some tests that have
been done on these machines by the media or at a university.
First, though, you need to know the make and type of machine used by the police,
and then the serial number of the machine used to check your speed.

Once you have that you need to get access to the maintenance records
of these machines, and in particular the one used in your case.
Next, you will want to see the documentation on the training of officer who booked
you. Aftger that, you should find out whether the officer has much
experieince in using the machine. If he or she has used it only a
few times, then the result may not be accurate.
You must find out as much as you can about these machines, and somewhere you will
probably find a flaw - and it is likely that the police officer will
not remember information he should. Of course, the officer will appear
in court, and you or your representative will question the officer
about his experience, trying to find that weakness that will exist.
You can also question him about storage, handling and maintenance of the machine - maybe
it has been dropped or got knocked down recently. You can ask whether
there have been other cases where the speed did not seem right.
In other words, if you ask all these questions, the officer will be on
the defensive, and is likely to make a mistake or even try to lie
his way out of it. In that case, you have a good chance of convincing
the judge that there is real doubt about your guilt, and you will
probably avoid a fine. This is one way that you can fight a speeding
ticket - and beat the speeding ticket.
