The device you want detects radar signals generated by the radar speed detectors used by the police. The early detectors used by relied on the use of radio waves that would bounce off of the vehicle and back to the detector. The radar detector would tell the police officer just how fast the car was moving. It did this with a technology called Doppler Effect moderated change in the car wave frequency. This is still used today, but other methods are also used.
