Just got your first speeding ticket? Or just worried that you will get one, the way that there are so many different limits in different areas - town, urban, country, freeway, expressway and Interstate or whatever.

Sad to hafve to say this, but speeding is illegal. That means you're breaking the law. OK, so you and I think that many of these lmits - and some other laws - are pretty unnecessary or too strict, but the fact is that in a so-called democracy we have to accept the laws - or get new people into government who will repeal the ones we don't like.

Some people seem to break these speeding laws for years on end without getting a ticket, and others who usually drive more slowly seem to pick up speeding tickets. The sad fact is that are dished out in a random and unfair manner.

If you have been driving for some years without a ticket, and then suddenly you get one there are some things you can do to help yourself. If you were not going very fast and if this is your first speeding offense, the police officer might just give you a warning.

So just the fact that you don't have many convictions for speeding may help. But the way you behave will also help. First, do take the situation seriously.





If you don't take the situation seriously, the officer may feel inclined to go ahead with the citation because he or she doesn't feel as though you've learned your lesson. Feeling that pinch in your pocketbook when you write the check to pay for the fine or hand over the cash to a clerk has much more impact on someone who doesn't understand the seriousness of speeding.

Therefore do show the officer respect, keep your composure and do not admit you were speeding. Then, the police officer sees that you're not finding it funny to be stopped, that you realize that you have broken the law and that you understand the impact that it affects both your driving record and your insurance premium.

Therefore, make sure that you remain calm and listen carefully. If the polic officer does decide to give you a warning, pay close attention to what they are saying. They are never obliged to give a warning as opposed to a ticket for first time offenders, but if you handle the situation correctly, you might save yourself a few dollars while at the same time take that warning to heart.
