Radar Detectors: Are They Legal? |
Radar detectors seem very attractive, especially if
you have just got a speeding ticket, and are worried about keeping
your licence or the cost of it all. A radar detector can save you
a lot of money, but before buying one make sure it is legal where
you live and drive.
Unfortunately, in some areas of the US and in some other
countries, the use of radar detectors is illegal. If you are stopped
and have one of these units in your vehicle, you may face some substantial
fines. On top of that, the unit may be confiscated.
Therefore, before you buy a radar detector, make sure
you can use one. Start off by looking on the internet, as that will
usually give you some information. Then make enquiries around.
Remember, if you are driving in an area that does not
allow the use of radar detectors, you may be caught with one and may
have to pay a whopping fine. It pays to know if it is legal or not.
Check out the websites of the cities that you drive through for help
in knowing the laws there about these devices. Also, call up the local
law departments and make sure that you know the laws for your area
on radar detectors.
How Do They Know?
You may be wondering how the police officer will even
know that you have one of these devices
They generally
do not just pull over anyone and find out. Instead, they are going
to find out through the use of their radar in your vehicle.guns.
Most of the police officers in areas where the detectors
are not allowed have speed detector guns to use to monitor speed that
are also equipped with radar detector detection abilities. This is
because the radar detector that you are using will usually be built
around something called a superheterodyne receiver. This will radiate
and therefore its signal can be picked up by the police detection
product. Therefore, it may be quite easy for them to catch you using
the radar detector.
Of course, there are radar detectors that an actually
block these as well - it is a real game getting the right machine
for your area! Radar detectors are equipped with the same type of
receiver and they too make the same type of omission. Therefore, you
can detect this as well.
If you are driving along with your radar detector and a police officer is using a speed detection unit on you, your radar
detector will block this from happening. But, if the police officer's
gun also is equipped to detect your instrument you could get caught!
So be careful and use the right sort of radar detector for the area.
